Dee is tenacious and resilient.  We met her when she was in 9th grade but her high school closed after 10th grade due to lack of funds.  She transferred to another high school and still maintained her 3.0+ GPA.  Although AIM High was no longer convenient because it wasn’t at her school, she persisted and attended Saturday Leadership Institute and the monthly Touchpoint Events.  She was accepted into multiple four year colleges and chose to attend UIC where they gave her a full ride for all but $2000.  At the same time, she unexpectedly received a full scholarship to college for an essay she wrote. Only when she was at the Award Ceremony was she told it was to a community college with a very low graduation rate.  She discussed her options with us.  Her heart was still set on UIC and we too thought a four-year degree would bring her closer to her goals.  Companies That Care then committed to helping her find the remaining $2000.  We will help Dee find work, we will help identify other options for scholarships, and, if nothing else turns up, we will give her the $2000 out of the donations from people who care, like you.  Growing up in poverty is the greatest determinant of college graduation. Only 9% of low-income students graduate from college, while over 75% of students coming from the top quartile of family income graduate.  Dee is smart, hard-working, creative and resourceful.  She deserves the opportunity to earn a college degree as much as anyone.  Thank you for joining us on the journey to right this social injustice.
