Terrific Tales Story Time
Center for Companies That Care has recently expanded the Terrific Tales program to include a family literacy component, called Terrific Tales Story Time. On the third Saturday of most months, at the West Englewood Library in West Englewood, The Storybook Mom is bringing her books, her games, her reading tips and her sparkle. You just need to bring yourself and an adult.

What is 'Family Literacy?'
Barbara Bush once said, "The home is the child's first school, the parent is the child's first teacher, and reading is the child's first subject." (www.barbarabushfoundation.com).
A child's learning starts in the home at a very young age. Family literacy programs such as ours seek to involve parents and other family members in the educational development of younger children through reading and storytelling activities.
Why is Family Literacy important?
Several research studies have demonstrated the connection between early literacy skills and overall academic achievement.
According to the National Center for Family Literacy:
- Children’s reading scores improve dramatically when their parents are involved in helping them learn to read.
- Low family income and a mother’s lack of education are the two biggest risk factors that hamper a child’s early learning and development.
How does Terrific Tales Story Time work?
On the third Saturday year-round (excluding August), professional storyteller Nili Yelin, known as "The Storybook Mom," will lead a story-time event for parents/guardians, adult relatives and younger children. After each storytelling session, Nili will provide tips to adults on the 5 key elements of telling a good "STORY." These sessions will be provided free of charge to community members.
S -- Simple; Be clear and be heard.
T -- Theme; What is the story saying?
O -- Out-loud; What makes a story fun to read out loud? How to pick the right book.
R -- Reading; How to connect with your child or group.
Y -- Say Yes! Be positive, take a chance!
